WITH predicted food shortages on the way, wouldn’t an inspired government invoke the wartime spirit and encourage people to grow their own? Back gardens, front gardens, even balconies. And what about those council estates with unattended spaces filled with rejected mattresses and broken supermarket trolleys – an orchard, maybe? It isn’t so much the economic sense or the coping with scarcity, but rather an initiative to muster communities to work together. Free packets of seed and simple growing instructions would be a small investment for a government to make in return for helping to mend a broken country. Nothing new about the idea, of course, as the wartime poster illustrates.
