THIS year, instead of Christmas carols, we are featuring excerpts from Part 1 of Handel’s Messiah, which is concerned with the birth of Jesus as foretold by the prophets of the Old Testament and reported in the gospels of Luke and Matthew.

Air: ‘Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is the righteous Saviour, and he shall speak peace unto the heathen.’ (Zechariah 9, vv 9–10)

This performance is by Lynne Dawson with the Brandenburg Consort and the choir of King’s College Cambridge, conducted by Stephen Cleobury. It is from the same recording as yesterday’s selection because I think it is the best.
